Does Case Keenum Deserve TD Record?
Case Keenum is no doubt a good quarterback on the college football level. He has proven that he can pick apart the defenses he faces week in and week out. He broke Graham Harrell’s record for the most touchdown passes in a career at the collegiate level. So why is it that we just don’t care?
Case Keenum has put up his numbers against lousy competition. He plays in the very weak Conference USA week after week. I am willing to go out on a limb when I say that there are more than 10 quarterbacks that are currently playing college football that would have broken that record had they played for Houston. Reason being that the competition they play is inferior.
If Andrew Luck, Landry Jones, Matt Barkley, or any other big name had the chance to play against UAB, Rice, SMU, and Marshall, they would have matched or surpassed the numbers Keenum is currently putting up. It’s not to say that Keenum isn’t talented, it’s just that the defenses he faces are very week.
If we look at the top 5 quarterbacks for career touchdowns, the only respectable number comes from Graham Harrell of Texas Tech. All of the others accomplished their feat against week teams. Kellen Moore (WAC), Ty Detmer (WAC), Colt Brennan (WAC), and Graham Harrell (Big 12).
So, does Case Keenum deserve the passing TD record? Sure. After all, he did accomplish what the record book states, however, I pose the question; Should he be listed as Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire…with an asterisk?
